the submarines have been in the spotlight for a little while. granted, it’s not the bright lights of… say… a performance of the blue man group. more like off broadway. maybe even off off broadway. so an appropriate tune to rekindle the song of the day is the thorny thicket by the submarines. go ahead and smile already.
in 2008 the submarines landed on nick & norah’s infinite playlist‘s soundtrack with xavia. it’s a good song. catchy. you me and the bourgeoise also got some heavy rotation in apple iphone 3g commercials. then there was their musical cameos on gossip girl, weeds, nip/tuck, grey’s anatomy, etc. other awesome songs from honeysuckle weeks could have been chosen, such as the wake up song, brightest hour, or maybe. declare a new state!’s submissions might have been the good night, ready or not, submarine symphonika, this conversation, and darkest things. (woulda been darkest things)
so what’s to love about the thorny thicket? emotive. solid lyrics. most of all, a haunting voice and fun goofy synthy-keyboard elements. and, ummm… did someone say tambourine. (or at least what sounds like one [fancy software makes it near impossible to tell these days]- yeah!) blake’s voice is complemented by ol’ johnny boy’s with a tad of harmonizing. the submarines are one of those brilliant ‘new’ bands that are a duet of two very talented artists that decide to rock out together. well rock on!
