in homage to the audiophilage mix my friend gave me, today’s song of the day is serpentine (lyricschords) by chris bathgate.

this song landed on npr’s song of the day over two years ago.  that’s because it’s good.  and npr is musically hip.  surprising to be sure…  beyond song of the day, they have the excellent series all songs considered and live concerts.

so… – chris bathgate – is clearly a talented singer-songwriter.  his stripped down, acoustic indie folk sound is ear candy.  serpentine has this ethereal melody that has a nice americana feel.  unlike some of his other material, this isn’t as much bluegrass-y as it is singer-songwriter-y and the piano makes all the difference.  the entire album is worth the listen, as well as his older material.  but if one song is worth singling out, it is serpentine, and amid excellent song choices from the mix such as love letter by nick cave & the bad seeds, goodnight goodnight by hot hot heat, she moves in her own ways by the kooks, and others, this song won.  today.

serpentine from a cork tale wake by chris bathgate ; acoustic indie folk pop 2007.
