the last of the songs of the day from the sub pop free digital sampler. it’s a track by bassekou kouyate & ngoni ba called musow.
with all the talent working at sub pop, you might have expected the last track to be norway from beach house (lyrics), or more of this (neighbors rmx) from vetiver (lyrics), or what’s in it for? from avi buffalo (lyrics), or maybe even the old track they threw on there by nirvana. nope. ut oh. not it. it’s the work of bassekou kouyate and his crew of merrymakers.
first of all, what in tar-nations is a ngoni? it’s the forefather of a banjo, an old school lute. what does this mean to you? you’re listening to a good ol’ african instrument played by a modern wizard. bassekou kouyate is the dude’s name, and his family comprises the ngoni ba. four people, the ngoni, and influence from a praise singing mother. the female singer with the group is pretty awesome and he’s been associated in the us a fair amount with bela fleck, who he’s on tour with now.
his work is really a beauty to behold.
