there are many many many many blogs out there. this is one of them. in particular, this is a music blog. or at least it’s supposed to be. i suffer from no delusions of grandeur, but a solid 2 or 3 people read it. halla!!
actually, truth be told, i don’t know of any really good way of tracking how many folks read this thing. sure, there are tracking cookies – but savvy internetters block script. firefox. even if not, the myriad of rss readers and feed aggregators will allow you to never actually visit the site. sad face. so without commenting, you remain long time listeners, maybe-one-day-first-time callers. but i digress.
i too read blogs. about music no less. i don’t claim to be familiar with all of them, but i at least know a few good ones. keeping track of all these puppies could be a full time job. for many a with-it intern. while i like lists, assigning numbers is arbitrary. so, here are some of the best music blogs out there in 2010. my criteria – the blogs that i star the most per blogita to come back and read again, delicious it, or the like. things i hate – parroting, jerkishness, and reposting for seo purposes. oh, you know who you are seo whores.
you’ll note that these music blogs reflect mostly indie, alternative, folksy and americana, and tend to shy away from mainstream garbago lady gaga news. so i guess these are the best indie-ish music blogs i’m currently aware of. feel free to hate on these recommendations, or add to them (stereogum was left off on purpose, and don’t even say idolator!). in no particular order:
http://www.fuelfriendsblog.com/ i am fuel, you are friends. heather, random girl that i will probably never meet. good job. pretty much everything that you write is gold. lots of good recommendations, songs, artists, and who knew that colorado had a scene.
http://musicforants.com/ music for kids who can’t read good. any blog whose category listing starts “oh snap, categories” is awesome. also, taylor must be doing something right to have been recruited to mtvu. lots of obscure, fun music and good for chicago, milwaukee, etc.
http://somevelvet.tumblr.com/ somevelvetblog.blogspot.com/ some velvet blog. maybe just as good as the blog itself is the list of blogs on the right of the page. they feature many good ones that have been left off, like walrus, roll & grady, muzzle of bees, my old kentucky blog, gorilla vs bear, largehearted boy, etc.
http://www.hearya.com/ hear*ya. as the blog’s blurb says. indie music. live sessions. daily downloads. umm… yes, yes, and yes please. they do a good job of putting up their own stuff in addition to the general indie music network posts that all the major bloggers seem to post.
http://radio3.cbc.ca/ cbc radio 3. the premier canadian independent radio station. they will help you keep track of more than just hockey from canada. with all the great music coming out of the great white north, it’s worth paying attention.
http://www.nialler9.com/ nailler 9. it’s nice to keep track of what’s happening over the atlantic, and this happens to be the best of the best from ireland. good coverage of the uk, ireland, and good ol’ u s of a music too. if you don’t like it, ask for your money back.
also rip: sad songs for dirty lovers at sadsongsfordirtylovers.blogspot.com/ seems blogger put a stop to the blog?? wha wha. this blog happened to be great. there is a last.fm radio station and it appears a new blog site might crop up sometime soon…
honorable mentions: brooklyn vegan, folk alley, and i guess i’m floating.
for aggregation alone (ie which bands, tracks, or videos the internet is abuzz with) try hype machine and elbo.ws.
* i’ll be trying to add a nice widget that will allow me to pipe said blogs through audiophilage.org if my webhost gets its act together…
