teach a man to fish.  that’s ok, but who doesn’t love just getting a sweet meal without having to do anything.  this is for the fishermen and the diners.

yellowjacket fisherman discover new music series

imo, here are some of the best ways to discover new music (in no particular order) with just a few ideas.  subsequent posts will give each more individual tlc.

people; make friends!

good record stores; ok, the little listening stations at barnes and noble don’t suck, but there is nothing like princeton record exchange, everyday music, other music, amoeba, and lou’s records

labels; so if you love a saddle creek, sub pop, drive-thru, or brushfire records artist, you might want to cheat on them with their labelmates…

blogs; gorilla vs bear, the walrus, some velvet blog, and muzzle of bees are great

compilations/samplers; soundtracks, paste, under the radar, and uncut are places to start

magazines; paste, under the radar, filter, american songwriter, mojo, uncut, and others rock

tv shows; gossip girl may be a guilty pleasure, but i don’t have to feel guilty loving the music they play

movies; have you heard about this movie called 500 days of summer

websites; they’re out there, and different than blogs cause they mostly try to hock stuff.  amazon is fantastic, and listomania and user guides are treasures.  there’s also this little thing called myspace

live music; go see an artist you like, and chances are you’ll hear something new.  bishop allen lead me to mt st helens vietnam band.  awesome

contributing artists; thank you damien rice for introducing me to lisa hannigan.  also, cartel was responsible for my love affair with juliet simms of automatic loveletter

internet radio; pandora, slacker, and last.fm.  ’nuff said

radio; some, but not much.  loving cbc radio 2 and wfuv lately

itunes/podcasts; genius is not bad.  too bad the songs aren’t as well categorized as pandora’s are.  itunes also make some good recommendations occasionally.  there are some great podcasts out there! what would anyone do without NPR

the list is not comprehensive, but it’s a good place to start.  mmm… have fun eating

I’ve also recently become more interested in (RED)WIRE. It requires a paid subscription, but they regularly send you new music and videos.
