there are a couple decent non-itunes music management programs out there. winamp is 100 years ago, but still works. many people swear by songbird. the most popular cnet download is jetaudio. foobar is also coming on strong, but i’ve recently discovered that media monkey is not too shabby. still a little rough, and itching to convert you from the free to the “gold” version, it still falls squarely into the, “you might just like this better than itunes” category.
podcast and mp3 player management, lots of metatagging options, and a good ui. you can manage a library across multiple locations or drives with ease, and even move playlists back and forth between your computer and ipod. khem. apple. khem. wouldn’t that be nice. khem. they also feature a few nice plugins, good support, and the id3 tag automatic web search is passable.
maybe what is nicest about the program is the multilayered categorization. you can parse your library with ease based on all the major id3 pieces, and also by “classification.” this is a media monkey ‘exclusive’ that allows you to tag songs, playlists, whatev by tempo, mood, occasion, and quality. to me, that says they were thinking of just making sense, as well as setting the mood -thanks al green-, other special occasions -did someone say indie dance party?-, and us folks that love live music but don’t -sad face- love the quality of all the recordings. very smart. then, top that all off with ratings that are precise enough to include half stars. netflix. khem. half stars. khem. that’s a great idea. khem. also, i love the little bomb looking symbol that stands for 0 stars. you stay classy…
don’t worry kid, apple’s not the only game in town. check out some of the best itunes alternatives, and have fun monkeying around.
